How do I calculate my net worth?
Updated · by ROW Home Solutions
Short answer: net worth = everything you own (assets) minus everything you owe (liabilities). Add up cash, investments, retirement accounts, home and property values, and vehicles; subtract mortgages, car loans, student loans, credit cards and other debts. The free ROW Net Worth Analyzer does the math instantly, with no signup.
What to include
| Assets (own) | Liabilities (owe) |
|---|---|
| Cash, checking, savings | Mortgage on your home |
| Retirement accounts (401k, IRA) | Rental property mortgages |
| Brokerage, stocks, crypto | Auto loans |
| Home value | Student loans |
| Rental property values | Credit cards |
| Vehicles, other valuables | Personal and other loans |
How to value things
- Home and rentals: a realistic sale price, not the purchase price. Some people subtract estimated selling costs to be conservative.
- Vehicles: what you could sell them for today.
- Retirement accounts: the current balance. Some people note that taxes and penalties may apply on withdrawal.
- Debts: the payoff balance, not the monthly payment.
Two numbers worth knowing
Besides your total, look at your income-producing net worth: assets that can pay you (cash, investments, rentals) minus the loans on them. It shows how much of your wealth is working for you. See assets vs liabilities, the Rich Dad definition.
What is a "good" net worth?
There's no single right number. It depends on age, income, location and goals. A more useful test: is your net worth rising year over year, do you have a cash cushion, and is your passive cash flow growing? Tracking the trend matters more than comparing yourself to averages.

What is the formula for net worth?
Net worth equals total assets minus total liabilities: everything you own minus everything you owe.
Should I include my home in my net worth?
Yes, at a realistic sale value, with the mortgage subtracted as a liability. The ROW Net Worth Analyzer also shows an income-producing net worth that leaves the home out.
What is a good net worth by age?
There is no universal target. A practical check is whether your net worth grows each year, you keep several months of expenses in cash, and your income-producing assets are growing. Comparing to averages can mislead because situations differ a lot.
How often should I calculate my net worth?
Monthly or weekly is plenty. The ROW Net Worth Analyzer saves a snapshot per day automatically when your numbers change and charts your progress.
